A group at UW-Milwaukee wants to lose the hyphen. They say that it makes the school seem like an afterthought and it certainly makes it seem to be smaller than it is. While I prefer "Milwaukee University" (and, frankly, thought that was where this was going given that the athletic department has promoted that), the group is going for "Wisconsin State."
Either way, a school with a name like that should have a football team.

A day or two ago the UWM student senate approved an advisory referendum question on the naming issue to go before the students later this month (I think April 26 and 27).
I can't remember all of the choices being given to students, but I remember Wisconsin State University, Milwaukee University, and Milwaukee State University being on the list.
The story was in the print version of the UWM Post either yesterday or today, but it looks like they don't update their website regularly because I couldn't find it there.
I still say Maple University.
I personally think it would be great if UWM had a Division II or Division III football team. Those games are fun to go watch.
There was talk of a Division I-A team. Anyone know what became of that?
If we are going to follow Elliott and name it after a person so it sounds like it's private, I say William O. Rehnquist University.
I think it is a bad idea all around. There are more important things for the students to focus energy on.
While I hardly think it is the most important issue facing the university, it is worth talking about. Public image matters. It matters in attracting students and faculties. It matters in obtaining grants and in keeping alumni attached to, and supportive of, the university. The folks that ran UWM when I was there didn't believe that and they have, I think, been proven wrong.
I agree with *67.
Big time football is good entertainment but corrosive to the principals of an institution of higher learning
Asian badger's idea of a Division lll team is more fitting. In addition, the team would likely produce more graduates.
