I may get some things wrong, but I can be held accountable. I’m not hiding in the shadows like the gutless wonders who sometimes dominate today’s political campaigns.

My experience as an editor and political observer is that people are nastier and push the boundaries of the truth when they speak from the cover of anonymity. Like it or not, these anonymous loud mouths can poison our civic culture.

Put another way, expecting people to man up to what they believe is hardly a threat to democracy, but arguably is at the heart of a well-functioning democracy. When Norman Rockwell painted his famous "freedom of speech” masterpiece during World War II, the working man standing up at the town meeting didn’t have a paper bag over his head.

He was taking ownership for his words.Marc Eisennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20692053.post-57595363632572111722010-08-06T20:22:04.329-05:002010-08-06T20:22:04.329-05:00Marc Eisen apparently believes citizens can't ...Marc Eisen apparently believes citizens can't evaluate speech without "critical information" about speakers. What "information"? Who must disclose such "critical information"? What in the First Amendment requires such disclosure? But I have to wonder if you’ve lost sight of a more important point: That as a society we benefit by having an informed electorate, and that disclosing who’s paying for these ads (and, boy, there are a lot of them!) gives the voters critical information for assessing them. It’s the old Brandeis axiom—Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Do you disagree?Marc Eisennoreply@blogger.com
