On the front cover of the Milwaukee Journal this past Sunday, a story leads: "As the so-called father of the religious right, Paul Weyrich is well-steeped in the frictions and frustrations the periodically plague the conservative movement he helped create. The sociopathy is usually either intensely personal (a teacher/principal, as was the case up north in Wisconsin) OR it's intensely anti-social-at-large (Columbine).

What we saw on the B&S board was a comment that was not broadly anti-social, nor specific to one (or a few) teachers/principals. It was, instead, specific to a rather arcane issue.

Not the typical fare of genuine wackos.

But I understand the concerns of teachers in the city-schools. And I have a proposed solution: armed teachers.

Works in Israel.Dad29https://www.blogger.com/profile/08554276286736923821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20692053.post-52163019766262993442007-12-01T17:07:00.000-06:002007-12-01T17:07:00.000-06:00If you're looking for examples of vaguely threaten...If you're looking for examples of vaguely threatening or misanthropic rants on conservative blogs, you will easily fill a few buckets before sundown. Head to Texas Hold 'Em. I bet the non-conservative bloggers will be finding plenty of examples in the next few days. I seem to remember seeing one lately - something about wishing that an accident should befall an accused criminal. Better or worse than obliquely admiring Columbine's shooters? Maybe Ijit Buss was imitating the poor spelling, typing and logic characteristics of many regular B&S commenters (like Dohnal?) just to blend in. :-) Of kourse, I komment on Owen's komments on my Boots and Kittens blog.

No doubt this will be Sykes' topic du jour on Monday, so the echo chamber will ring. In this, I hope there's plenty of discussion about the role of anonymity on blogs. B&S's policy was all over the map on this. They allowed anonymity, even encouraged it. If you wanted to smear a liberal commenter, sure, go ahead, use an anonymous name. You think Owen didn't know and smile and watch? Right. But then they'd "out" someone based on their IP address when they felt like it, as in recent examples where a contrary commenter posted from a governmental IP address, Owen and Jed felt free to reveal that info as a point of argument in one of their subsequent comments!

I can't help but let this be about me, me, me. When I was booted from B&S on similarly unevenly-enforced T&S violations, Owen claimed I'd sock-puppeted a half-dozen times. His claim is utterly false. I ask him to show evidence to support it or rescind that accusation. He would ask the same of me or anyone else who impugned his character this way.Display Namehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15842340986220388709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20692053.post-45895164252215347332007-12-01T16:20:00.000-06:002007-12-01T16:20:00.000-06:00Rick - Good post but I thought you would also cove...Rick -

Good post but I thought you would also cover a bloggers responsibility in turning over the IP address as he did by a simple phone request by the police.

Does a blogger have any rights to deny the request unless a warrant is involved? Does the commenter have any expectation of the blogger to keep it in confidence?

If the tables were turned and the liberals were on this, I think the ACLU would be asking these questions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20692053.post-40204408776313627752007-12-01T14:19:00.000-06:002007-12-01T14:19:00.000-06:00Well, anon1, we agree -- and this is from a "libru...Well, anon1, we agree -- and this is from a "librul" who deplores a lot of the conservative "crap" and hysteria created on blogs, too.

In this case, it's just not funny to schools these days. And that a teacher would do this suggests that help is in order. Maybe because he's in a comparatively quiet school district, he's too dense and insensitive to realize how such threats are heard. But those of us in the cities, with friends who are teachers in the cities -- not just Milwaukee but West Allis, Waukesha, etc. -- know he did do harm.

In legal terms, he cried "fire" in a crowded -- and fearful -- theater, where good teachers are trying hard to maintain a good front and get education done. If this arrest has a chilling effect on all sides of the political divide, fine.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20692053.post-20177712996299040372007-12-01T12:09:00.000-06:002007-12-01T12:09:00.000-06:00He didn't intend to harm anyone?
